Set back from the tourist trail, deep within the
hills, lies the hilltop village of Caugliano and a
short drive away is the bustling town of Fivizzano.

A little over an hour northwest of Pisa lies Lunigiana.
The Lunigiana is lost in time. A breathtaking landscape where
castles and ancient walled villages perch above lush green
valleys. But yet the region remains of the tourist track.
Northwestern Tuscany is home to the most beautiful
mountains! Studio Paradiso is set in the heart of the Appenine
mountains and they form the dramatic backdrop of Casa Dell
Unicorno. A train ride to Lucca through the mountains and the
Garfagnana is a wonderful way to see this beautiful region.
Caugliano is a quiet, red-roofed medieval village typical of
Lunigiana with wonderful views of the mountains and valley
below. Yet within two kilometres there is Fivizzano - a pretty
walled town where bars, restaurants, shops cluster round the
Piazza Medicea - where a stop at the wonderful gelateria is a
must.
Liguria - Italy`s most beautiful coastline
The Bay of Poets is on our sketch trip itinerary. Legend has it
that Byron swam regularly across the bay from Portovenere to
the far distant shore of Lerici. Our excursion is much more
relaxed.
You can retrace DH Lawrence's footsteps and then stop for
lunch at a trattoria further along the coast at Tellaro - a
painters paradise, where beautiful pastel coloured houses cling
to the edge of the cliff and look out to sea.
Here you can take a dip in the Mediterranean , then flood
your sketch book with the colours of sea, sky, freshly painted
upturned boats and sun-faded walls.
